The form of the pots shown above is, so far as we are aware, unknown in any other context. Pigment pots have been found at two sites in continental Europe, both of which were painter's tombs. If we presume that artisans were itinerant, it would be highly unlikely that "tools of the trade" such as these pots would be found at residential sites. The fact that these were found in a burned-out cellar suggests that the painter was working on the premises at the time of the fire. If anyone has any information pertaining to pigment pots, (or indeed, pots of this form) found in Britain, particularly in a domestic residential context, the Site Director would be most interested to hear about it. |
